A first ride review on KTM's 2017 1090 Adventure R, the lighter-weight, less-expensive replacement for the outgoing 1190 Adventure R. With full street pressure in either the Metzeler Karoo 3 or Continental TKC 80 tires, and nearly 100 pounds of gear strapped to the motorcycle, the 1090 Adventure R feels like it’s on rails. Rails which tend to drift a bit here and there, but rails nonetheless. The stock suspension is an amazingly robust out-of-the-box setup for this class. Maybe 990 was not dialed but to get them to a high level the 990 did not need fork cartridges as the 1090R does. The 950/990 also has a larger 50mm pds shock. I would suggest starting by confirming that your suspension is set to the “Basic Setting” that is on a sticker where the front of the seat meets the fuel tank. You can then adjust from there to find what is best for you. I would also try changing the rear shock preload to the lowest setting and see how that feels.

The suspension surely helps with this. KTM own WP; their R&D departments are on the same site in Austria and they work hand-in-hand. The fully-adjustable but non-semi-active 48mm forks and shock both use settings and technology from KTM’s pukka enduro bikes to give professionally pitch-perfect control over the tricky stuff.
